Louisiana’s industrial corridor — running along the Mississippi River from Baton Rouge to New Orleans — is home to some of the largest petrochemical refineries and chemical plants in the world. Workers in these facilities face chemical hazards that most people will never encounter. One of the most dangerous and least understood is hydrogen fluoride (HF).
This article explains what hydrogen fluoride is, how workers get exposed, why it is so harmful, what treatment looks like, and what legal rights an injured worker may have.
What Is Hydrogen Fluoride?
Hydrogen fluoride is a colorless gas or fuming liquid with a sharp, pungent smell. When it mixes with water, it becomes hydrofluoric acid. It is stored and shipped in pressurized steel cylinders.
Despite its simple chemistry, hydrogen fluoride is one of the most hazardous industrial chemicals in use today. In Louisiana, it is commonly found in facilities that perform:
- Oil refining — used as a catalyst in fuel production
- Uranium processing — used to separate uranium isotopes
- Metal and glass etching — used for rust removal and surface cleaning
- Semiconductor manufacturing — used to clean silicon chips
- Industrial chemical production — used as a reagent in various processes
Workers at refineries and petrochemical plants along Louisiana’s River Road have some of the highest rates of potential exposure in the country.
Why Hydrogen Fluoride Is So Dangerous
Most acids burn the surface they touch and stop there. Hydrogen fluoride is different — and that difference is what makes it so deadly.
When hydrogen fluoride contacts the skin, the fluoride ion doesn’t stay on the surface. It penetrates deep into tissue, passes through skin layers, and attacks structures far below what you can see. Once inside, it binds to calcium and magnesium in cells, causing them to die. This process can continue for hours or even days after contact.
As fluoride ions build up in the bloodstream, they throw off the body’s electrolyte balance — dropping calcium and magnesium levels while driving potassium levels up. Those changes can cause dangerous heart rhythms, cardiovascular collapse, and death.
The most important thing to understand: a small or seemingly minor exposure can be fatal. A tiny area of skin contact with concentrated hydrogen fluoride can kill. And with dilute solutions, there may be almost no pain at first — while serious damage is occurring beneath the surface.
How Workers Get Exposed
Hydrogen fluoride can enter the body in three ways.
- Breathing it in is one of the most common and most dangerous exposures in industrial settings. Even low concentrations in the air cause rapid burning and irritation to the eyes, nose, and throat. High concentrations can cause the airway to swell and close almost immediately. Fluid buildup in the lungs — pulmonary edema — may not appear until 12 to 36 hours after the exposure.
- Skin or eye contact is the most frequent type of workplace exposure. The fluoride ion absorbs through both healthy and damaged skin. High-concentration solutions cause immediate, severe pain and visible burns. But solutions below 20% concentration may cause little or no pain for 12 to 24 hours — all while causing deep tissue destruction. Workers who feel fine after a low-concentration exposure are at serious risk of underestimating what has happened to them.
- Swallowing it is less common but can be fatal even in small amounts.
What Hydrogen Fluoride Does to the Body
The damage hydrogen fluoride causes goes well beyond a typical burn.
- Skin: Burns are deep and slow to heal. High-concentration exposures cause immediate, intense pain and blistering. Fingertip injuries are especially difficult to treat and can lead to lasting pain, bone loss, and permanent nail damage.
- Eyes: Even a minor splash can cause the surface of the eye to slough off, internal eye structures to swell, and tissue to die from lack of blood supply. Permanent corneal clouding — and blindness — can develop immediately or over several days.
- Lungs: Airway swelling, bronchospasm, and fluid in the lungs are all possible. Serious inhalation injuries can result in permanent lung disease.
- Heart and circulation: The fluoride ion’s effect on calcium and magnesium levels can trigger life-threatening heart rhythms. Cardiac arrest and death have occurred from exposures that initially appeared minor.
- Long-term: Repeated exposure over time can damage the kidneys and liver and cause fluoride to accumulate in bone.
Safety Exposure Limits
Federal agencies have set the following workplace exposure limits for hydrogen fluoride:
- OSHA Permissible Exposure Limit (PEL): 3 ppm over an 8-hour workday
- NIOSH Immediately Dangerous to Life or Health (IDLH): 30 ppm
- ACGIH Ceiling: 2 ppm
One useful fact for workers: hydrogen fluoride has a noticeable odor at just 0.04 ppm — far below the OSHA limit. If you can smell it, that is a warning to get out of the area immediately. But smell alone should never be the primary safety check. Proper monitoring equipment and protective gear are required at every facility where hydrogen fluoride is present.
What to Do If You Are Exposed
Every second counts. Do not wait for symptoms before acting.
1. Call for help immediately. Contact 911 and your facility’s emergency response team. Do not wait to see how you feel, especially if the exposure involved a dilute solution that may not cause immediate pain.
2. Remove contaminated clothing. Take off any clothing that has contacted hydrogen fluoride as quickly as possible. Double-bag it to prevent contaminating others.
3. Flush with water. Rinse exposed skin with large amounts of plain water for at least 30 minutes. Flush exposed eyes with plain water or saline for at least 20 minutes, removing contact lenses if they can be taken out without further injury.
4. Apply calcium gluconate gel if it is available. Emergency responders use a gel made from calcium gluconate to neutralize the fluoride ion on the skin. It should be applied to the burned area and continued until pain is relieved. Know where this treatment is kept at your facility before you need it.
5. Do not induce vomiting if hydrogen fluoride was swallowed. Give the conscious patient water or milk, and a calcium- or magnesium-containing antacid such as Maalox or Tums if available.
Hospital Treatment
Emergency treatment for hydrogen fluoride exposure is intensive and highly specialized.
Skin burns require early involvement of a burn specialist or plastic surgeon. Calcium gluconate gel is applied first. If pain is not relieved within 30 to 60 minutes, calcium gluconate is injected directly into and around the burned tissue. For hand and finger burns — common in industrial settings — intra-arterial infusion of calcium gluconate may be needed.
Critical warning: calcium chloride must never be used on hydrogen fluoride burns. It causes extreme pain and makes the injury worse. Only calcium gluconate should be used.
Eye injuries require immediate consultation with an eye specialist. The eyes are irrigated extensively. Topical anesthetics are used to allow thorough flushing. A dilute calcium gluconate solution may also be applied.
Inhalation injuries are treated with supplemental oxygen and, in serious cases, nebulized calcium gluconate. Patients must be observed for at least 24 hours because pulmonary edema can develop long after the initial exposure.
Systemic toxicity — the dangerous electrolyte changes that affect the heart — is treated with intravenous calcium and magnesium, continuous heart monitoring, and intensive care unit admission in serious cases.
One important point about pain management: with skin burns, the level of pain guides treatment. When calcium gluconate is working, pain decreases. For that reason, doctors generally avoid numbing the burn site — it would mask the signal that treatment is effective.
Do Not Assume You Are Fine
One of the most dangerous aspects of hydrogen fluoride exposure is that it can feel minor at first. Workers exposed to dilute solutions may feel no pain for hours before symptoms hit suddenly and severely. A small burn from concentrated hydrogen fluoride may look insignificant while being life-threatening.
If you have been exposed to hydrogen fluoride at work — even if you feel well — go to an emergency room immediately. Tell the medical team exactly what chemical was involved and, if known, the concentration and how long you were in contact with it. Your medical records should clearly document that this was a workplace chemical exposure.
Employer Responsibilities
Employers in Louisiana are required by federal law to provide workers with a safe workplace. For facilities that use hydrogen fluoride, that includes proper chemical hazard training, up-to-date Safety Data Sheets, appropriate personal protective equipment, written emergency response plans, and immediate access to decontamination facilities and calcium gluconate treatment.
If a work-related exposure occurs, report it to your employer in writing and keep a copy. The incident may also need to be reported to OSHA or Louisiana state health authorities.
Legal Rights of an Exposed Worker
A serious hydrogen fluoride exposure can mean months of medical treatment, permanent injuries, lost income, and profound changes to quality of life. Workers in this situation have legal rights that are worth understanding.
Workers’ Compensation
Workers’ compensation is usually the first legal avenue for an injured worker in Louisiana. The system pays benefits regardless of fault — you do not have to prove your employer did anything wrong. If you were exposed to hydrogen fluoride on the job, you are likely entitled to coverage for all necessary medical treatment, wage replacement if you cannot work, and compensation for any permanent impairment.
There are strict time limits for filing workers’ compensation claims in Louisiana, so it is important to report the injury promptly and seek legal advice early.
Workers’ compensation does have real limitations, though. It does not pay for pain and suffering, and wage replacement benefits are capped — often well below what a worker was actually earning. For seriously injured workers, that gap can be enormous. This is where third-party claims become critical.
Third-Party Tort Claims
In Louisiana’s petrochemical industry, workers are frequently employed by contractors or staffing companies working inside facilities owned by someone else. When the company that owns or operates the plant is not the worker’s direct employer, the injured worker may be able to file a full civil lawsuit against that facility owner — separate from and in addition to a workers’ compensation claim.

Equipment manufacturers whose valves, pressure fittings, or protective devices failed and contributed to a release.
Engineering and maintenance contractors whose improper work on a hydrogen fluoride system caused or contributed to an exposure.
When Both Claims Apply
It is common — and often advisable — to pursue both a workers’ compensation claim and a third-party lawsuit at the same time. They are not mutually exclusive. For seriously injured workers, filing both is often the only way to achieve full financial recovery.
One important point: if workers’ compensation benefits have been paid, the employer or its insurer generally has the right to seek reimbursement out of any third-party settlement or verdict.
